Internships @ Physioactive
Hi, my name is Preston, and I am currently a Grade 12 student at the British School Jakarta. I completed a two-week internship at PhysioActive to gain firsthand experience in the day-to-day operations of a physiotherapy clinic, as part of my preparation to pursue a degree in Sports Science. Going into my internship, I hoped to gain exposure to both the practical aspects of physiotherapy and the business side of running a clinic in efforts to help me with deciding between pursuing the hands-on work involved in sports science or focusing on the business and management side of a sports science-related company.
I really enjoyed my time at Physioactive. I learnt many things ranging from injury assessments and rehabilitation planning all the way to financial planning and the management of therapists. As soon as I entered the clinic I was met with a very welcoming staff of therapists and receptionists who took me under their wing. They were not shy to show me the day to day operations of the clinic and talk me through every process elevating my understanding.
Shadowing the therapists, I was able to see first hand how each therapist conducted their assessments. I observed their unique communication styles when interacting with patients, as well as their ability to accurately diagnose conditions and develop effective rehabilitation plans. What stood out to me was how adaptive the therapists have to be. Watching patients come in each day with a wide range of injuries—and seeing how the team consistently met each of their unique needs—was truly impressive to me. The receptionist team was no different. They were all welcoming and were very hospitable to guests. Receptionists operated with impressive efficiency and effectiveness when planning schedules and organizing follow-up treatments for patients. Through them I learnt how much work and organization it takes to run the clinic day to day.
On the management side of the business, I observed how an app was used to closely monitor the performance of both individual therapists and the clinic as a whole. I also attended weekly staff meetings, where I saw how even minor issues were addressed and resolved quickly and collaboratively. It taught me the importance of communication and if big issues were to be prevented minor issues had to be addressed quickly.
In conclusion, my internship experience at physio active was very rewarding and memorable. It not only deepened my understanding of physiotherapy practices but also gave me valuable insight into the business and operational aspects of running a clinic. I’m truly grateful to the welcoming staff and the clinic’s owners for giving me the opportunity to be part of PhysioActive for two weeks—an experience I will always value. This experience has helped clarify my career interests and has strengthened my motivation to pursue a degree in Sports Science, whether on the clinical or management path.
